Previously Jim spent four years at the helm of Gladedale Capital, the commercial and mixed-use development arm of one of the UK's biggest property development and house-building companies.</p>

A conference and exhibition centre would be a great economic driver for the region, with the potential to deliver 2,000 jobs, around 270,000 visitors per annum and at least &pound;25m per annum into the economy (through the additional spend of new business visitors to the region).</p>

<p>Initial focus has been on the former Maynards' Toffee Factory converting this derelict building into a business development centre, for the creative, cultural and digital industries sector as 'move on' space for their growth and development. The Toffee Factory is located on a plot of land known as Lower Steenberg&rsquo;s Yard, just north of the mouth of the Ouseburn. It is anticipated the building will be ready to move into by the end of 2011.</p>
<p>Other projects which form part of this first phase of activity include Ouseburn East Bank (including the Heaney and Ice factory site) where waterfront residential accommodation is proposed, and several public realm projects, developing both infrastructure and public squares that will integrate and link Ouseburn Valley with the Quayside.</p>

Northland Properties will complete the refurbishment of the former Scottish &amp; Newcastle office building in summer of 2011 when it will open as a Sandman Signature Hotel.</p>
<p>Construction activity on the land owned by the project partners is due to commence (subject to receipt of the necessary planning approvals) during 2011, with the provision of the first phase of site infrastructure.</p>
