Meet the Board
Chaired by Lord Charles Falconer, the private sector-led Board will review progress and agree priorities to drive forward the pace and quality of economic growth. Find out who these influential developers and regeneration specialists, prominent local business people and public sector representatives are.
Lord Charles Falconer has been at the heart of politics for the last decade. He was a minister in Tony Blair's government for all of its ten-year life and Lord Chancellor for its last four years. Lord Charles Falconer was appointed as Chair of the city development company 1NG in summer 2008. He has a distinguished political and legal career involving successful leadership at the highest level. This knowledge and expertise has been invaluable in driving forward 1NG’s activities and establishing credibility with government agencies along with potential investors and developers.
Catherine has been a councillor since 2002 and a Cabinet member since 2004 her special interests include public health, supporting families, equality of access to education from children to older people and the regeneration of Gateshead.
Nick is Leader of Newcastle City Council. He has been a Councillor since 2000 and his Ward covers much of the City Centre area. Following a career in the NHS Nick is currently also Chief Executive of a regional charity.
Councillor Mick Henry has been Leader of the Council since 2002.During his leadership, the Council has maintained a commitment to continually improving services for local people, whilst delivering world-class cultural facilities. He was awarded a CBE for his services to local government in 2007.
Barry Rowland has worked at Newcastle City Council for over 30 years, starting in 1979 as an Environmental Health trainee. He was appointed as Chief Executive in September 2009. Barry is married with four children. He was awarded a Master of Business Administration at Durham University in 1997.
Observers
Roger Kelly is from County Durham and has been a qualified solicitor for more than 30 years. He joined Gateshead Council in 1987 as Deputy Director of Legal Services, was promoted to Director in 1990 and was appointed Chief Executive in April 2004. He has been involved in all the major development and regeneration work in Gateshead, including the National Garden Festival and in later years led the project steering group overseeing the redevelopment of Gateshead Quays which now boasts the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.
